Rest and Digest

I love to make use of eye pillows in my yoga classes. They are so beneficial for activating our ‘rest and digest’ response also known as the parasympathetic nervous system. So when my recent, locally sourced lavender order arrived, it was time to bring the sewing machine out and make some more eye pillows.

I use calico for the inner pack as it’s so robust and forgiving. It will not mind being microwaved and it will hold the flaxseed and dried lavender firmly in place. I divide the inner into two even sections so that the eye pillow distributes it’s weight as evenly as possible over the eye lids when being used. I fill the inner with NZ Flaxseed and locally grown, spray-free dried lavender as I find these the perfect combination for a truely relaxing experience. Flaxseed, unlike some other filling alternatives will last and is ‘skin-friendly’. The weight and texture is also really perfect for the eye pillow.

The outer cover is 100% cotton, has a beautiful soft and comfortable texture against the skin. Best of all it is removable and machine washable. The final touch I’ve added (I just couldn’t resist) was the little label detail. I was browsing around an adorable craft shop in Miramar, Wellington and I came across these labels. I just had to get them, I thought they’d be the perfect finishing touch.

So now, I’ll grab an eye pillow, put on a yoga nidra audio and settle in for some quality rest and digest time with my eye pillow.
